Dr A Suneetha

Suneetha is part of the Law and Critical Legal Theory Initiative and is currently working on the project 'Feminist Politics, Rights Discourse, the Family and Sexuality: Rethinking Women’s Suffering and Agency.' She completed her PhD from the Central University of Hyderabad. Her thesis, “Family, Gender and Power: A Study of Women and Violence in Families in Andhra Pradesh”, looked at women’s negotiations with domestic violence, harassment and deprivation in the absence of a public discourse on women’s rights. Suneetha is the Coordinator of Anveshi and an ex-officio member of the Executive Committee.

Suneetha’s earlier work include a project titled Institutional Responses to Domestic Violence, completed during 2000-2003. Her investment in familial violence and rights began with her activism with the Andhra Pradesh Civil Liberties Committee and Human Rights Forum in the mid-nineties. During 1994-1995 she was a research assistant on a UGC supported project on human rights in Andhra Pradesh. She has also prepared curricular material and delivered lectures for a Post Graduate Diploma Course in Human Rights at Hyderabad Central University during 1998-1999.

Suneetha is a recipient of doctoral fellowships awarded by the Indian Council for Social Science Research, New Delhi, 1995, and by Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, New Delhi, 1996-1998. She was one of the coordinators of the first South Indian Young Feminists Conference, 'Listening Together, Talking Differences,' organised by Anveshi and Hyderabad Women’s Collective in September 2001.
